Frequently Asked Questions about
Repair and Storage Disputes

I repaired/stored something for someone and now he refuses to pay me. What can I do?
If the item is in your possession, you are entitled to hold on to it until you are paid in full. If the item is not in your possession, you can register a lien against the item and the person and then have the item retrieved.

Can I retrieve the item myself after I register a lien?
No. You have to make arrangements with the Sheriff's office to retrieve the item for you.

What do I do next?
If the article is not one that is subject to ownership registration, such as a motor vehicle, boat, motorcycle or snowmobile, the article now legally belongs to you. If there is registration involved, you must give written notice to the registered owner and if no response is received within the specified time, prepare and swear an affidavit in order to have the registration transferred to your name.
